Overview of Zhenjiang

Zhenjiang, a city at the intersection of the Yangtze River and the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, is committed to becoming "A Promising Land for Innovation and Entrepreneurship & A Garden City of Waters and Hills". It covers a total area of 3,840 square kilometers and has a permanent population of 3.22 million. Zhenjiang comprises three sub-cities of Danyang, Jurong and Yangzhong, three districts of Dantu, Jingkou and Runzhou, and two national development zones of Zhenjiang Economic and Technological Development Zone and Zhenjiang High-tech District.

Zhenjiang is renowned as a cultural city. With more than 3,000 years of recorded history, Zhenjiang is the birthplace of a great many legendary figures, such as Yang Yiqing, Liu Xie, Ge Hong, Ma Xiangbo, Mao Yisheng, ect., and home to a number of historical relics, ancient poems and classics, and popular legends. The masterpieces, including Selected Literature Compiled by Prince Zhaoming (or Zhaoming Wenxuan), The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons (or Wenxin Diaolong) and Dream Pool Essays (or Mengxi Bitan), are the treasures of Chinese culture. Zhenjiang has so far won the titles of "National Historical and Cultural City" and "China's Excellent Tourist City".

Zhenjiang is reputed as an ecological city. There are 235 hills and 63 rivers in the city, with a forest coverage rate of 25.6%. As blended into a harmonious whole with forests, hills and waters and endowed by nature with advantageous ecology, Zhenjiang has long been known as the "City of Forests and Hills", and lately been awarded the titles of "National Ecological Civilization Pilot Zone", "National Low-carbon Pilot City", and "National Ecological City".

Zhenjiang is well-known as a city of great love. Romantic love stories, such as "Madam White Snake Flooding Jinshan Temple" and "Emperor Liubei Recruiting Relatives at Ganlu Temple", are very popular. Patriotic stories like "Liang Hongyu Beat the Drum Atop Jinshan Hill to Defeat Enemies", "Anti-British War at Jiaoshan Hill" are still inspiring. Virtue stories of "Ji Zha Hung his Sword on a Tree" to stick to his promise, "Zhao Yafu Dedicates to Promoting Agriculture" are being passed down. Zhenjiang has been awarded the title of "National Civilized City" and "Chang'an Cup", the highest honor for comprehensive management of social security in China.

Zhenjiang is famous as an industrial city. With 9 national and provincial development zones, Zhenjiang is an important base of advanced manufacturing industry in the Yangtze River Delta region, and a core city in Nanjing Metropolitan Circle. The city has 9 colleges and universities, including Jiangsu University and Jiangsu University of Science and Technology, and over 20 secondary vocational schools. Seven railways and six expressways traverse its territory. Zhenjiang Port, among China’s 43 pivotal ports, achieved an annual throughput of 267 million tons in 2023. Zhenjiang Dalu Airport is the first Class-A1 general airport in East China.

In 2023, the city achieved a GDP of 526.407 billion yuan, general public budget revenue of 32.071 billion yuan, and per capita disposable income of urban and rural residents of 64,602 yuan and 35,466 yuan respectively.
