Sponsored by Jiangsu Education Department, the 2024 theme activity of “Reading Jiangsu” was recently hosted by Jiangsu College of Nursing. The event invited more than 120 international students from 33 colleges and universities and 40 countries to start an unforgettable journey of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) culture through on-site visits and experience.

During the activity, the international students followed the professional teachers to learn the traditional Chinese health care exercise - Baduanjin. They stood as though straddling a horse and bent their knees, tilted their heads and turned over their palms, aimed their hands at the ground in front of their feet, and exhaled, practicing the routine with seriousness and concentration. According to Liana from Russia, Baduanjin is a kind of magical Chinese Kung Fu, which makes people feel calm and is good for health, and she would continue to learn it in the future.

Afterwards, the international students went into the Smart Chinese Medicine Training Base, examined Chinese herbal medicine specimens and watched TCM teaching videos, so as to better understand the history and the development of TCM while experiencing on-site pulse taking and other TCM techniques. With the international students marvelling at the profound culture of TCM, Li Qingya from Laos said that this was her first close contact with TCM and that she would share the knowledge and culture of TCM with her family and friends in the future.

In the first-aid training session, professional teachers explained basic first-aid skills such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation and guided the international students to have a hand-on learning. Everyone observed and followed the teacher to learn the skills, and said they had benefited a lot from it.

The major of TCM at Jiangsu College of Nursing features a long history and rich heritage. In recent years, the college has attached great importance to the development of international students, actively promoting the brands of “Study in China” and “Study in Jiangsu”, and has created the programme of “Ancient Poetry and TCM”, “Rural Revitalisation” to help them better understand Huai’an, Jiangsu and China.
